Got a youngster who wants to learn to shoot and earn marksmanship classifications? Got a few minutes free on Tuesday nights? The Air Rifle Program might be for you. Our target audience is youngsters aged 9 through 19 but adults are certainly welcome to try their hand. Youngsters younger than 9 are allowed, if in the opinion of the match director, they are capable of safe gun handling.

All shooting is with air rifles at olympic size targets at 10 meters, governed by the Winchester/NRA qualification program. Each qualification level achieved is rewarded with a certificate and a medal.

We start with the fundamentals of marksmanship and safe gun handling. The shooter fires from a supported (sandbag) prone position and progresses through mastery of the prone, kneeling, and standing positions.

A $2 fee per shooter is assessed for each range session. This covers the cost of targets, air (rifles are charged from a scuba tank), pellets, and awards. All necessary equipment is provided.

If you know of a young shooter who would benefit from this program, please get on the mailing list here and contact Dan Gray, [email protected].

Currently the program is administered by a very small cadre of coach/instructors and we would welcome volunteers to expand our leadership. NRA coaching certification is a plus but not necessary. Experience as a competitor in any rifle discipline would be most helpful. A desire to help out is all that is all that is required. Training on the administrative aspects of the program will be provided on the job.
